Hong Chau: Homecoming Actress and Downsizing Star has solidified her place in Hollywood. Here’s a look into the life of the Vietnamese refugee-turned-Hollywood star.

Award-winning actress Hong Chau (born June 25, 1979) has become one of the most talented and acclaimed actors in show business.

With her breakthrough roles in films such as Downsizing and Homecoming, and critically acclaimed turns on the television series Watchmen and Treme.

In 2019, Chau was featured in the critically acclaimed Netflix film ‘The Highwaymen’, alongside co-stars Kevin Costner and Woody Harrelson.

The movie takes place during the time of the Great Depression and tells the story of two former Texas Rangers who set out to catch the notorious outlaw couple Bonnie and Clyde.

Miraculously, it wasn’t much longer until a Vietnamese Catholic church in New Orleans, LA offered to sponsor her family’s relocation to the States.

Hong was then raised in the same city, where she began learning English at school and speaking Vietnamese as her first language.

Chau’s parents put in a lot of hard work, as they worked menial jobs to ensure their children could afford college.

Chau’s acting career began in 2006 with small screen appearances – most notably in the HBO series Treme (2010-2013).

But it was her role in 2017’s Downsizing that truly pushed her career forward.

The American science fiction comedy-drama film was well received by critics, with Chau’s performance garnering particular praise and various award nominations.

Since then, she has gone on to score more film and TV credits, including guest roles in several TV shows in 2018 and supporting roles in 2019’s Watchmen and The Whale, for which she received a nomination for an Academy Award.

Before Hong Chau was born, her parents and two brothers lived in South Vietnam.

In 1979, they were amongst the thousands of ‘Vietnamese boat people’ who had to flee their country.

During their escape, her father was shot, which almost cost him his life. Chau was welcomed into the world in a refugee camp in Thailand, sometime later that same year.

Having kept her personal life pretty under wraps, it was a surprise to many when it was revealed that the 41-year-old actress is a mother.

In early 2020, Hong Chau announced that she was expecting her first child and gave birth to her daughter in November of the same year.

She claims that her pregnancy experience was surprisingly joyful, but parenting has presented an entirely new set of challenges.

Though not much else is known about her private life, what we can be sure of is that Hong Chau is one of the most shining stars of the present day.

With a variety of successful roles on both the big and small screens, she has earned her place in Hollywood – and shows no sign of slowing down.

In 2020, she penned the script for ‘The Caviar in the Banana’, which won the Best Narrative Short award at the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival.

Chau then returned to the stage in 2021 to perform the role of a Vietnamese employer in the drama ‘Less Than Human’.

Outside of acting, Chau has appeared as a guest speaker for several different events. Most recently, she addressed the graduates of the 2020 commencement ceremony at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles.

During her speech, she spoke about the importance of facing adversity with courage and seeking out social justice.
