Nipsey Hussle, whose birth name was Ermias Joseph Asghedom, was born and raised in the Crenshaw District of South Central Los Angeles.

He was born to Angelique Smith, an African-American woman, and Dawit Asghedom, an Eritrean war refugee.

As a teenager, Nipsey joined the Rollin 60’s Neighborhood Crips, a sub-group of the larger Crips gang based primarily in his home neighborhood of Crenshaw.

Despite his involvement with the gang, he also had a strong entrepreneurial spirit and pursued his passion for music.

His Father’s Eritrean heritage influenced his worldview, and he often spoke about the need for unity and collaboration among African Americans and people of African descent worldwide.

Nipsey Hussle’s parents were Dawit Asghedom, an Eritrean war refugee who fled the ongoing Eritrean War of Independence and came to the U.S., and Angelique Smith, an African-American woman.

Nipsey had a brother named Samiel, who is also known as Blacc Sam, and a sister named Samantha.

Despite the challenges they faced as a mixed-race family, Nipsey’s parents instilled in him a strong sense of pride in his heritage and cultural roots.
