His father was an architect in South Korea before moving his family to Canada in 1988.
The Yeun family later moved to the United States and settled in Taylor, Michigan, before eventually moving to Troy, Michigan, where Yeun graduated from Troy High School in 2001.
He has a younger brother named Brian.
Yeun’s family spoke Korean at home, and he was raised in a Christian household.
His parents owned beauty-supply stores in Detroit and began calling him “Steven” after meeting a doctor by that name.
Yeun attended Kalamazoo College, receiving a bachelor’s degree in psychology with a concentration in neuroscience in 2005.
