In the latter film, he portrayed the villainous Russian MMA fighter Yuri Boyka, which brought him mainstream recognition and praise for his performance in what is considered one of the best American martial arts films of recent times.
The film featured notable talents such as lead actor Michael Jai White, fight coordinator J.J. Perry, and director Isaac Florentine, and its fight scenes were particularly well-regarded.
Following this, Adkins had guest appearances in bigger-budget films like The Bourne Ultimatum (2007) and The Tournament (2009) and played the main antagonist opposite Jean-Claude Van Damme in The Shepherd (2008).
