Radio Journalist Cris Bundoquin Shot To Death: Is Shooter Arrested?

Cris Bundoquin Shot: In the Philippines’ central Oriental Mindoro province, radio host Cresenciano Bundoquin was assassinated by gunmen riding motorcycles. 

On the morning of May 31, at about 4 am, Bundoquin was shot and killed by two unidentified gunmen outside his residence in Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro. The assailants were motorcyclists.

Since the commencement of President Ferdinand Marcos’s administration in June 2022, three journalists have been assassinated, including Bunduquin.

Seven months had passed since the murder of another radio personality, Percival Mabasa, who was shot dead outside his studio in Manila.

According to information from the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines, Bundoquin is now the 198th journalist killed in the Philippines since 1986.

Radio Journalist Cris Bundoquin Shot To Death

According to several press accounts, Bundoquin was shot and killed early on May 31 on the C5 Road in Calapan, in the province of Oriental Mindoro, by two gunmen riding motorcycles.

Bundoquin was attacked while opening a store he owns in Calapan. Bundoquin ran the internet radio station MUX Online Radio and presented the Ayos Mandin radio program on the local station DWXR 101.7 Kalahi FM.

The journalist was shot in the chest by one of two currently unnamed males who approached him on a white Honda XRM 125 motorcycle at about 4:20 in the morning, according to local police.

Bundoquin was taken in an ambulance and later pronounced dead at a hospital nearby. Samuel Delorino, the director of the Oriental Mindoro Police, announced that one of the two suspects, Narciso Ignacio Guntan, has been identified.

According to station management, Bundoquin was renowned for providing incisive coverage of regional topics, including political changes, environmental concerns, and illegal gaming.

Before his death, he faced many threats. Police have failed to prove a link between the incident and his journalistic work.

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) asked that the Philippine government initiate an immediate and thorough inquiry into the death to discover whether the victim was targeted because of his journalism and to apprehend those responsible.

Who Was Cris Bundoquin?

When Chris passed away, he was 50 years old. He owned the internet radio station MUX Online Radio and the local radio station DWXR 101.7 Kalahi FM, where he hosted the Ayos Mandin radio show.

At the Philippine radio station DWXR 101.7 Kalahi FM, Cris Bundoquin worked as a broadcaster.

Station manager Jester Joaquin described Bundoquin as “hard-hitting” on regional issues, such as a recent oil spill, illegal gambling, and politics.

According to Joaquin, Bundoquin had been receiving threats and was considering changing careers. He revealed this to the AFP.

The online radio station MUX Online Radio belonged to him as well.

This most recent homicide serves as a sad reminder that journalism is still a dangerous profession in the Philippines, even though the reasons behind the attack on Bundoquin are still unknown and a police investigation is still ongoing.

Outside of his residence in Calapan City, Bunduquin, 50, was shot and killed by two unidentified assailants.

Narciso Igancio Guntan, one of the gunmen, was shot and killed by responding police, according to some sources.

Other sources state that he was killed when Bunduquin’s son struck his car as they fled the scene. The other shooter was still at large on June 1st morning.

To clarify this occurrence and allow the immediate arrest of the offenders, “We are maximizing our efforts to get more evidence and testimonies,” Acorda told reporters in Manila.

Bundoquin was the first journalist to be shot and killed in the Philippines this year, according to the National Union of Journalists, Philippines. However, since President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. entered office in June 2022, three persons have been murdered.
