When Varlamov turned himself into Denver Police, he was taken into custody on suspicion of second and third-degree assault and domestic abuse against his girlfriend.

Varlamov was accused of misdemeanor violence against his girlfriend on November 22, 2013. On December 20, 2013, a Denver judge dismissed the charges because the prosecution could not establish their case beyond a reasonable doubt.

Varlamov was raised in Kuybyshev and trained in hockey with the VVS. At eight, he began playing in goal before learning to skate correctly, choosing the goalie stick over the subpar bandy sticks that mite-level players used.

Early in his teen years, the young goalie relocated to Yaroslavl, where he immediately became the club’s starting goalie.

Varlamov made his professional debut with Lokomotiv-2, the junior farm team of Lokomotiv, in the 2004–05 season, filling in for Ivan Kasutin in the First League (Russia 3).

Kasutin was loaned to Penza during the summer of 2005, elevating Varlamov to the starting position for the 2005–06 Campaign. He assisted Lokomotiv Yaroslavl in 2008 as they advanced to the Russian Super League finals.

Varlamov was Russia’s backup goalie for their 2005 IIHF World U18 Championships fifth-place finish.

He defeated Ivan Kasutin, a teammate from Lokomotiv-2, for the Russian backup position at the 2006 World Junior Championships.

Then, he was 17 years old. Varlamov, who backed up Anton Khudobin, played in just one match against Latvia, a 3-1 round-robin victory, in which he allowed one goal. He took home a silver medal with Russia, who finished last after losing to Canada 5-0.

Later in the year, Varlamov was selected to start in goal for Russia’s under-18 team in the 2006 IIHF World U18 Championships, where they finished fifth.
