Kiptum was born on December 2, 1999, in Chepsamo village, Chepkorio, Elgeyo-Marakwet County, to a family that was heavily impacted by the Kalenjin people’s rich traditions and rituals.

The Kalenjin, one of Kenya’s major ethnic groups, have a strong cultural identity related to their farming methods and a storied history of producing world-class long-distance runners.

Kiptum grew up in Chepkorio, a high-altitude location in the Rift Valley, where values and customs were passed down through generations of the Kalenjin people.

The catastrophe not only cost the life of this remarkable runner, but also took away a son, Asenath Rotich’s spouse, and father of two children.
