The tragic death of 7-year-old Jacqueline Martinez following a dental procedure at New Smile Dental Office in Riverside, CA, has been declared an accident by officials.
The autopsy report revealed that the cause of death was hypoxic encephalopathy resulting from tooth aspiration during the procedure.
The report details that Martinez was given anesthesia on the buccal gingival and was nervous before the process.
Her left upper molar was elevated and extracted with forceps, but during the extraction, Martinez suddenly moved and accidentally aspirated the tooth.
The Heimlich maneuver was performed, but it was unsuccessful, and Martinez lost consciousness. Attempts to remove the tooth obstruction with advanced life support methods were also unsuccessful.
Martinez was rushed to a Riverside hospital and then transferred to the pediatric unit at Loma Linda University Medical Center. She was pronounced brain-dead twice and finally on March 7.
The incident is under investigation by the Dental Board of California. Dr. Thien Luong, who performed the procedure, continues to practice at New Smile Dental Office.
The autopsy report notes that attempts have been made to obtain details about the events following the tooth aspiration, but without success.
