Nearly every one of the 25 male senators from Alabama who supported the bill indicated their commitment to being a conservative Christian in their official biography. They are missionaries, Sunday school instructors, and deacons.

However, six Alabama senators who opposed the bill also make mention of their Christian religion in their official biographies, highlighting a different aspect of the abortion debate: religious perspectives are more varied than we typically think.

However, Alabama serves as a case study for how challenging it can be to analyze religion’s nuanced involvement in the contentious abortion debate in this country.

It frequently manifests itself during triumphant occasions, like Ivey’s celebration, or in times of dissent, like when a lady protested in character outside the Alabama state capitol.
