Murder charges against Perry were upheld. His defense requested a new trial, arguing that the jury was affected by “outside influence.” On Thursday, a Travis County judge denied that request.

Following Perry’s conviction, a Travis County judge released court documents that revealed he had a long history of making racist statements in communications and social media posts.

Perry informed a friend on Facebook in May 2020, only weeks before the shooting, that he “might have to kill a few people” who were rioting outside his apartment.

The records also include a text message sent by Perry in May 2020 that says, “I might go to Dallas to shoot looters.” Among the messages were “white power” memes.

In a 2019 message, Perry said it’s “too bad we can’t get paid for hunting Muslims in Europe.”

According to the records, Perry compared the Black Lives Matter movement to “a zoo full of monkeys that are freaking out flinging their sh*t” in a June 1, 2020, social media statement.
