On Tuesday night, Sylis Wilfinger, 14, died in the sad train accident in Chesterton, Indiana.

Around 7:10 pm, Sylis was involved in an accident when she was struck by a train at the Norfolk Southern line’s North 15th Street grade crossing.

On the south tracks, while a westbound train passed on the north tracks, Sylis was sitting on his bicycle, according to the Town of Chesterton’s Facebook page and the early results of the inquiry.

Sylis had reportedly gotten around the crossing arm of the Norfolk Southern grade crossing at North 15th Street.

Unfortunately, despite the operator of the eastbound train repeatedly honking the horn as it approached Sylis on the south tracks, the kid never turned to face the incoming train.

Norfolk Southern detectives are assisting the Chesterton Police in their continuing investigation.

Although the investigation is ongoing, Chesterton Police Chief Tim Richardson described the incident as unfortunate and emphasized the need for education to ensure public safety around trains.

By 9:23 pm on Tuesday, train activity had resumed on the bustling tracks that run through the city’s heart, but the tragedy has had a lasting impact on the neighborhood.
