Following his birth, Anthony Avalos’ Father, Victor, and mother, Heather, split up, and he was living with his mother and Kareem Leiva, her lover.
His ailment and his mother’s maltreatment of the youngster were never disclosed to his Father. For an extended period, Victor was cut off from his infant son.
Anthony’s birth Father’s identity has not been made public.
Following a thorough investigation, first-degree murder charges have been brought against both Barron and Leiva about Anthony’s passing.
The couple could receive a life sentence or at least 30 years in prison. The six-year-old youngster was whipped with a looped rope and a belt by Barron and her boyfriend after they spat hot sauce over his face and mouth.
Why Did Anthony Avalos Step Father, Kareem Ernesto Leiva, Kill Him?
It is impossible to guess the precise motives behind Anthony Avalos’ murder because it is unclear what led his mother and her lover to do such a horrific deed.
But according to accounts, Anthony had endured significant physical abuse and torture over a lengthy period from both Leiva and Barron, who also had histories of substance misuse and domestic violence.
The 10-year-old’s short and tragic existence exposed significant flaws in the county’s child welfare system, and on Tuesday, his mother and her ex-boyfriend were found guilty of murder in connection with his passing in 2018.
Heather Barron and Kareem Leiva, the defendants, chose to have a judge hear their case rather than a jury. After six days of deliberating the evidence, Judge Sam Ohta of the Los Angeles County Superior Court decided.
The pair was also found guilty of torturing Anthony and mistreating two of his siblings. Ohta upheld a claim based on unusual circumstances that the couple beset the youngster to commit a murder.
At a sentencing hearing the following month, they will likely get a life sentence in prison without the possibility of release.
He suffered from internal bleeding and head pain due to the couple holding him upside down and dropping him repeatedly on his head.
His mother’s boyfriend was detained in June 2018 after being suspected of giving Los Angeles County sheriff’s detectives a false impression.
In an interview, Leiva claimed that after pushing the youngster once, the boy just fell and suffered a head injury that may have resulted in internal bleeding.
Anthony Avalos Siblings
Avalos has two half-siblings. The half-sibling of a 10-year-old boy who passed away in 2018 testified on Wednesday that they had been punished in their Lancaster home, including wrestling, kneeling on uncooked rice, and watching each other be reprimanded.
They also claimed to have witnessed their mother’s boyfriend repeatedly drop their half-brother on the bedroom floor just before he died.
The non-jury trial of their mother, Heather Maxine Barron, and her live-in boyfriend, Kareem Ernesto Leiva, included the evidence of Anthony Avalos’ half-sister, Destiny., and half-brother, Rafael.
