Leo Varadkar is an Irish politician who has made history as Ireland’s first openly gay taoiseach (prime minister).

Born on January 18, 1979, in Dublin, he attended a state-run Catholic elementary school and a private Protestant secondary school before studying medicine at Trinity College Dublin.

After completing his medical degree, he worked as a junior doctor at several hospitals in Dublin. In 2004, Varadkar became involved in politics, joining the center-right Fine Gael Party.

He was elected to the Irish parliament in 2007 and served in various government positions before becoming Party Leader in 2017 and, subsequently, the country’s taoiseach.

Leo Varadkar was brought up Catholic but is not a practicing Catholic as of now. His Father is of Indian origin, while his mother is Irish. Therefore, Varadkar is of mixed ethnicity.

He is the first Irish government Leader of partly Indian origin, and his background has been a topic of discussion in Irish politics.

Despite being of Indian origin, Varadkar was born and raised in Dublin and identified as Irish.

His ethnicity has not affected his political career; he has been widely respected for his political and leadership skills.

While he has visited India several times, Varadkar’s primary focus has been serving the Irish. He has been recognized for contributing to the country’s economy, healthcare, and social policies.

Leo Varadkar was born on January 18, 1979, in Dublin, Ireland, to Ashok and Miriam Varadkar.

He has two sisters, Sophie and Sonia. His Father, born in Bombay (now Mumbai), India, moved to the UK in the 1960s to work as a doctor.

His mother, who was born in Dungarvan, County Waterford, met his Father while working as a nurse in Slough, and they married in the UK in early 1971.

Leo’s elder sister Sophie was born while the family lived in Leicester, UK, before moving to India. Finally, they settled in Dublin in 1973, where his other sister Sonia was born.

Leo’s parents had a mixed-faith marriage, with his Father being Hindu and his mother being Catholic. Leo himself was brought up Catholic, but he is not practicing.

Leo Varadkar Partner and Kids

Leo Varadkar and his partner Matt Barrett have been together since 2015, and they are known to be a private couple who rarely discuss their personal lives in public.

They were first spotted together at the Dublin Pride parade in 2015 and have been together ever since.

Matt Barrett is a cardiologist, and the couple reportedly met through a mutual friend in the medical profession. They have shared several photos on social media, including some from their travels worldwide.

They also enjoy spending time together at home and have shared glimpses of their cozy and stylish Dublin home on social media.

As of 2023, Leo Varadkar has no children. In a 2018 interview, he said, “I’d love to be a Father someday. But obviously, I can’t do it on my own, so that would have to be worked out.”
