In July 2018, Joseph DiMeo was involved in a severe car accident while driving home from work as he fell asleep while driving.
His car collided with a curb and a utility pole, overturned, and burst into flames.
A stranger rescued him, pulling Joe from the burning car. However, he suffered third-degree burns on about 80% of his body, losing his eyelids, fingertips and lips.
Despite the severity of his injuries, DiMeo defied the odds and survived. Then, in August 2020, he made history by becoming the first to undergo a victorious double hand and face transplant.
This groundbreaking surgery, performed by Dr. Eduardo Rodriguez and his team at NYU Langone Health, offered Joe a chance at a new life.
Before the transplant, DiMeo had to endure numerous surgeries and faced significant challenges in his daily lifeFindingng a suitable donor was challenging, with the chances of a perfect match being relatively low.
However, a suitable donor was eventually found in Delaware, and the complex surgery took place over 23 hours with multiple teams working simultaneously.

After spending 57 days in inpatient rehabilitation, Joe DiMeo transitioned to outpatient care, where he dedicated five hours daily to various therapies.
He underwent hand, occupational, face, and physical therapy to aid his recovery.
As said by Dr. Eduardo Rodriguez, Joe does not shy away from challenges and always strives for more from his healthcare team.
To ensure the success of his transplants, Joe is taking immunosuppressant medications for the rest of his life to prevent his body from rejecting the transplanted organs.
Alongside the medication regimen, he continues rehabilitating to optimize his progress.
Remarkably, only four months after the transplant surgery, Joe achieved significant milestones in his recovery.
He regained the ability to dress, feed himself, play catch with his dog Buster, and even use light free weights and exercise machines.
Joe also practiced his golf swing, displaying his determination and motivation.
