The club stood him down for allegedly meeting two women during a pre-season trip to Port Macquarie, along with teammate Corey Harawira-Naera.
Although no criminal investigation was pending, both players were asked to explain why their registrations as NRL players should not be canceled or suspended.
A leaked Instagram message revealed that Okunbor had contacted one of the women, asking, “Yeah, had to have a good look; what are we doing tonight?”.
The controversy caused the club to lose a $2 million sponsorship deal with Rashays. On 1 April 2020, Okunbor’s contract was terminated by Canterbury-Bankstown, and the NRL deregistered him.
On 13 July 2020, the NRL Appeals Tribunal reversed the decision to deregister Okunbor and Harawira-Naera, citing that the punishment was too harsh.
Okunbor was retrospectively given a 14-game ban, a $22,500 fine, and a counseling/community service course.
