John Albert “Buck” Martinez is a former professional baseball player and manager who played for 17 seasons in Major League Baseball with the Kansas City Royals, Milwaukee Brewers, and Toronto Blue Jays.

After retiring from playing, he became a successful broadcaster, working on radio and television broadcasts for both the Blue Jays and the Baltimore Orioles and nationally for TBS and MLB Network.

Currently, Martinez is a television color commentator for the Toronto Blue Jays, providing expert game analysis and insights.

He also briefly managed the Toronto Blue Jays in 2001-2002 and led Team USA during the inaugural World Baseball Classic in 2006.

Cancer: Buck Martinez Illness Update 2023

In mid-April 2022, longtime Toronto Blue Jays broadcaster Buck Martinez announced that he had been diagnosed with Cancer and would be taking a leave of absence from his role as a color commentator.

He began treatment in the following weeks, and Sportsnet announced that the Blue Jays game on Sunday against Oakland would be his last before stepping back from television.

Martinez had partnered with fellow commentator Dan Shulman from 1995 to 2000 and again since 2016, and Shulman had told him during his first year that they could make their partnership successful.

Martinez, now 74 years old, began his career as a color analyst for the Blue Jays in 1987 after playing for 17 seasons in the majors.

He managed the club from 2001 to 2002 and Team USA at the inaugural World Baseball Classic in 2006. As of 2023, further updates on Martinez’s health have not been publicly disclosed.

Buck Martinez Health: Where Is He Now?

Buck Martinez’s health condition has deteriorated after being diagnosed with cancer and he has undergone treatment.

Martinez has already announced the first six matches of the Grapefruit League for the Blue Jays and is expected to make further announcements for the 2023 World Baseball Classic.

He has had a successful career as a broadcaster, working on the Blue Jays and Baltimore Orioles radio and television broadcasts and for TBS and MLB Network.

Buck Martinez continues to be a beloved figure in the world of baseball, both as a player and a commentator.

Buck Martinez Family 

Buck Martinez comes from a family with a military background. His parents, John Albert Martinez and Shirley Martinez served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

His mother, Shirley, was stationed at a Boston hospital and worked for the Women’s Army Corps, while his Father, John, served as a Combat Engineer and participated in the Battle of The Bulge in 1944.

John Martinez also had a connection to the infamous Pearl Harbor attack, as he was present at the naval base on that fateful day.

In addition, Buck’s mother, Shirley, was featured on the Stars and Stripes Magazine cover during WWII.

Buck Martinez is married to Arlene Regina Hughes, a former American Airlines flight attendant. They reside in New Port Richey, Florida.
